National building workers’ strike 1972 – 50th anniversary

Spread the love

In 1972, the leadership of UCATT and TGWU (both now part of Unite) under great pressure from lay activists, called a national building workers strike. The strike was to last 13 weeks and result in the largest wage increase that building workers had ever received.

In the years following the 1972 strike, the employers, with the support of the State, extracted their revenge. Both are directly responsible for the 50 year Shrewsbury miscarriage of justice and casualisation within the industry.

To mark this 50th anniversary, the Construction Sector and the L&E Region are organising a public meeting at the TUC, Congress House, London.
