Striking canteen workers employed by BaxterStorey at the Drax power station in East Yorkshire protested outside the power station’s annual general meeting 25 April over poverty pay.
Drax is a major employer near Selby, and is also a major polluter fighting against union recognition.
It is the UK’s biggest carbon emitter. It receives £2 million per day in so-called “sustainable subsidies” and made a profit last year of £1.2 billion.
Union recognition is a must, and decent pay for workers is easily affordable. There seems to be plenty of dosh to enrich shareholders and management, but not to give workers decent pay.
Climate action is a trade union issue. We need proper pay and conditions for workers during a just transition to green sustainable jobs. Let’s manufacture insulation and renewables instead of burning forests.
